What Not to Do With Your Humidors!

HumidorsAlright, let’s say that you have just purchased your new humidors. You have just finished the seasoning process, and naturally, you are anxious to try out your new humidors. You’ve added your cigars to the humidor, and the humidifying device is in proper working order. Now what do you do? Nothing? Not so fast… There are a few things you are going to want to ensure that you do NOT do. Here is our top 5 no no’s for new humidors:

  1. First and foremost, you must never, under any circumstances, place dried out cigars in humidors whose relative humidity levels exceed 70% or higher. If you do, this will cause the wrapper of the cigars in your humidors to swell and crack, which will render your cigars unsmokeable.
  2. Secondly, you should never place your humidors in an environment where it will be routinely subjected to extreme changes in temperature. In essence, you are going to want to avoid placing your humidors underneath vents, near radiators, fireplaces, or other heating units.
  3. Next, you must take precautions to ensure that your humidor is not placed in a room where the temperature regularly exceeds 78 degrees Fahrenheit. This will impede the ability of your humidors to regulate their internal humidity and temperature levels.
  4. In a similar fashion, your humidors should not be placed where they will be exposed to direct sunlight. If your humidors are exposed to direct sunlight, it can cause a greenhouse effect that will raise the internal temperature levels of the humidor. Also, you must remember that in the wintertime, the sun’s light is lower in the sky than in the summer, so your humidors may need to be moved when the seasons change.
  5. Finally, you must avoid leaving the lids of your humidors open for extended periods of time. Doing so will not only dry out your cigars, but your humidors as well. If this happens, then it will require you to re-season your humidor, which is a time consuming process. Likewise, you should avoid opening and closing the lids of your humidors too often.

These are just general guidelines for how not to handle your humidors, but they should be followed as closely as possible in order to preserve the integrity of your cigars. Humidors are a lifetime investment, so it is going to be important for you to ensure that you purchase high quality humidors for your cigars to start with.
