Because the smoking of a cigar should be a pleasurable experience, it is essential for an individual to learn how to smoke a cigar properly. First and foremost, an individual will need to prepare their cigar, which consist of cutting the end of the cigar. The cut should be clean and smooth, because the jagged or torn edge of the end of the cigar can contribute to an uneven burning of the tobacco. It is best to use a proper cigar cutter for this step. The next step is for an individual to remove the ring wrapper. More experienced smokers often prefer to leave the ring wrapper on until the heat from the smoked cigar causes the wrapper’s glue to melt. Once the glue has melted, it generally falls off of its own accord. It should be noted that it is considered rude to leave the ring wrapper on to simply show off the brand of cigar one is smoking.

The next step in learning how to smoke a cigar is to light the cigar. In most instances, the use of wooden matches or butane lighters is preferable, because they do not impart a taste into the tobacco of the cigar. The source of the light should be held up to the end of the cigar, and the smoker should inhale gently with their mouth to draw the flame towards the cigar. Ideally, the entire tip of the cigar should be evenly lit, and the lit portions will maintain an orange appearance. When smoking the cigar, the cigar should be held to one’s mouth to draw in the smoke. The smoke should be held in the mouth for a few seconds before it is exhaled. Experienced smokers know not to inhale the smoke of cigars. The alkalinity of the cigar can irritate one’s lungs and induce coughing bouts.

In order to appreciate the complexity and the flavors of the cigar, one to two minutes should be timed in between each draw upon the cigar. Periodic rotation of the cigar is essential when one is learning how to smoke a cigar. This action ensures that the cigar maintains an even burn throughout the smoking process. Often, the time required to smoke a cigar can exceed one hour. If the smoking of a cigar cannot be completed with the allotted time frame, the cigar may simply be set aside when one is finished. It will extinguish itself after a moment or two if it is not being puffed upon.
