It is important for an individual to learn how to set up a humidor, because the humidor provides the ideal environment for storing and prolonging the life of an individual’s cigars. The most difficult aspect of setting up a humidor, for the first time, is ensuring that the proper temperature is achieved. To begin, an individual should pour two cups of distilled water into a bowl. A cotton cloth should be dipped into the water and used to clean the interior of the humidor. The humidifiers should be removed from the humidor and allowed to soak in distilled water for approximately 15 minutes until they are fully saturated. After being removed from the water, they should be dried slightly with a soft towel. Then, they should be placed back into the humidor.

The next step in learning how to set up a humidor is to allow the humidor to sit for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. After the time period has elapsed, the hygrometer should be checked. The hygrometer is the device that monitors the amount of humidity within the humidor. Ideally, the hygrometer should read between 64 and 72 humidity. This is the ideal environment to maintain one’s cigars in. If the humidity reading is too high, then the individual may remove the humidifiers and add half of a teaspoon of propylene glycol to the distilled water before refilling them. If the humidity reading is too low, then the individual should soak the humidifiers again and repeat the aforementioned process.

There are some individuals who prefer that their cigars are slightly drier or damper than the general recommendations. Once an individual has properly learned how to set up a humidor, he or she will be able to adjust the level of humidity in the humidor to suit their personal tastes. Finally, the cigars should be placed in the humidor, and the lid should be closed. Over the following five to seven days, he or she should regularly check their hygrometer to ensure that the humidity levels of the humidor remain within the stated recommendations. Ideally, the humidor should remain full. This allows it to maintain a more constant level. The more empty the humidor is, the easier it will become for the humidor to become drier.
